The Houston Astros took on the the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday at Minute Maid Park with the Astros coming out on top 3 to 0. Wow! What a nail biter! Bud Norris went 6 innings for the Astros, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and no earned runs with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Astros was Jeff Fulchino (3.26), and LaTroy Hawkins (2.24). The Cardinals’s starter John Smoltz went 6 innings, allowed 5 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with no walks and 5 strikeouts. Blake Hawksworth (2.25), Dennys Reyes (3.29), and Ryan Franklin (1.98) also pitched for the Cardinals. With the win, Norris’s record goes to 6-3, while Smoltz is at 3-7. Jose Valverde earned the save for the Astros, bringing his saves up to 24.
In addition to the 3 runs, the Astros scored 6 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Astros, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. The Cardinals didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Mark DeRosa could not get much going at the plate as he left 4 runners on base. The Cardinals scored no runs, 7 hits and no errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Mark Wegner, Rick Reed, Jeff Kellogg and Tim Timmons. There were 38,732 Astros ticket holders in attendance at Minute Maid Park.
The win puts the Astros at a record of 71-81, (17.5 games behind the division leader), while the loss brings the Cardinals to 89-64, at the top of their division.
